Why, oh why did I decide to cut down on coffee right before the school year madness? Where will I be without a morning commuter fix of Sumatra cafe au lait, followed by a mid-morning iced hazelnut latte and post-lunch Turkish coffee?

If Mom & Dad are lucky, the prep work for the first day of school will be a breeze: no ill-fitting clothes, lunches will practically make themselves, and there will be no first-day jitters or tears from the kiddos -- or from the parents either, for that matter.

Kitchen nostalgia is a powerful thing. Some of our earliest cooking memories consist of glass Ball jars on the counter, awaiting an array of harvested fare: figs to make preserves, yellow squash with onions, chile peppers to be added to vinegar, and of course, the ubiquitous summer tomato -- the unofficial fruit of the South.

Our long-time friend, Alicia, contacted us out of the blue yesterday, bragging like any proud parent about Owen's performance in a recent contest. The video that she sent of little Owen was certainly impressive, and it was apparent that he deserved a well-earned trophy.
