New this week in Fiesta Mart stores is the Original Progress Grocery Muffuletta sandwich. Pick one up during your next trip to the store - it makes a great lunch idea!
Created out of necessity, the Muffuletta sandwich was born in New Orleans when Sicilian immigrants were working at the port of New Orleans and farm fields surrounding the city. They took the loaf of bread, known as the Muffuletta, and combined it with various Italian cold cuts and olive salad which provided a full meal in the short time available for lunch. Eventually the street vendors, delis, and groceries of the French Quarter recognized the potential for a quick sale by swiftly assembling the sandwich ready for consumption. The creation of the Muffuletta has taken on many combinations; however, the consistent ingredients incorporated in the sandwich are olive salad and Muffuletta bread.
Progress Grocery still uses the same recipe to craft the Muffuletta that Bartholomew Perrone created over 85 years ago.
More about Perrone & Sons
Bartholomew Perrone, a Sicilian immigrant, opened the Original Progress Grocery store located on Decatur Street in the heart of the New Orleans French Quarter in 1924. The central location allowed the Perrone family to serve the Italian community which encompassed a majority of the historic neighborhood. Now into their fourth generation, the Perrone family is sharing this unique tradition with people who have come to learn the flavors of this Majestic City.
