How To Keep Your Flowers Fresher Longer

How To Keep Your Flowers Fresher Longer

Flowers _Fresh _longer

Valentine's Day has come and gone (good news for some of you probably!), but those beautiful flowers are still in bloom. At least for now. We know first hand how roses and bouquets can brighten up your room or dining room table and certainly brighten up your attitude, so we want to help you learn the tricks of keeping your flowers last longer.

We consulted our Floral Department experts for a few handy tips, and here they are. If you have additional tips to share, please leave us a comment, we'd love to keep these beauties alive forever!

Keeping the stems trimmed and the water fresh and plentiful is the first step to keeping your flowers standing bright and tall. The best way to cut your flowers it with a sharp (un-serrated) knife and to cut at an angle. Any leaves that will be under water (in the vase) should be removed, but not thorns on roses as that tends to shorten their life span.

Who knew Vodka could help also? Vodka helps kill the mold and bacteria which can grow on flowers (which is a huge killer of those beautiful bouquets). Simply add a few drops of vodka (or any clear spirit for that matter) and that will help them last longer. Same goes with clear soda. Soda (preferably clear, especially if in a clear vase) can help the blossoms last longer.

Adding a few tablespoons of sugar or lemon juice to the flower water (known as their food) will also help. Plants are just like humans (well almost!) as in they need daily food and water to survive too!

Remember not to store your flowers anywhere with a lot of heat (i.e. the stove, which for some reason seems to be the favorite spot of many flower lovers!).

When in doubt, next time you're in one of our grocery stores, stop by the Floral Department and ask one of our experts, especially if you have a favorite flower. The care and maintenance for each type of flower can differ (although not greatly) and it's a good idea to know the best plan of action.

Life's a Fiesta! Stop by your local Fiesta Mart this week and find out what's going on inside (and of course stop by our Floral Department even when it's not Valentine's Day).
