14 High-Protein Back-to-School Snacks

It's that back-to-school time of year again, when we begin to alter our summer routines to fit school day schedule. Often, kids get hungry right after school, but you don't want them to eat empty calories every day and you don't want them to fill up on food right before dinner. Protein snacks are the perfect way to eat just enough for longer-lasting energy. Here are 14 after-school protein-packed snacks:

Beef or Turkey Jerky: Natural or lightly-flavored jerky is a great source of protein. This chewy snack is quite portable and keeps fresh for months when packed properly. A one-ounce serving (the size of most single-serve packs) contains about 9 grams of protein!

Mixed Nuts or Trail Mix: Mixed nuts are an easy way to get a delicious dose of protein in a convenient, shelf-stable package. Try a mixed bunch for variety and a combo with dried fruit for some added sweetness. Almonds and Pistachios are higher in protein and lower in saturated fat than other nuts. You can either purchase pre-made mixes or make them yourself from offerings in our Bulk Food Department.

Pumpkin Seeds: The pumpkin insides, scooped out, can actually make a healthy snack after they're washed, dried, and perfectly roasted! Just ½ cup of pumpkin seeds contains about 14 grams of protein ― the perfect on-the-go snack.

Nut Butter Boat: Rather than limit yourself to peanut butter, try almond, cashew or even sesame seed butter. Load up a few celery sticks with any nut butter, or a even a variety. Not nuts for celery? Scoop out the middle of an apple and fill with a nutty surprise!

*KIND Bars: Their classic varieties are a great source of protein from the all-nut base (coming in at around 5 grams per bar), but for an even bigger shot of staying power, try Kind Plus with added protein.

High Protein Cereal: Yup, cereal. Just make sure it's the right kind of healthy, high protein cereal - one that contains plenty of nuts and seeds. Pour the amount you want into a baggie and off you go!

Hummus Dippers: Add 2 tablespoons prepared hummus to the bottom of the container. Add a handful of vegetable sticks (carrots, celery, jicama and snow peas are a great mix!) vertically in the hummus, screw on the top, and throw into a gym bag or back-pack for a super-healthy snack.

Banana Nutter: Elvis got this one right! Few pairings are more comforting than a peanut butter and banana combo. Top a wafer, cracker or crispbread with 2 tablespoons of your favorite nut butter and half a banana, sliced.

Chocolate Milk: Low-fat chocolate milk is actually a great source of high-quality protein! Keep a single-serving, shelf-stable box in your back-pack for snack attack emergencies.

Black-Bean Tacos: When it's time to get spicy, try this easy snack fix. Heat ½ cup of black beans in the microwave with 1 tablespoon of salsa. Mash with a fork and fold it inside a soft flour tortilla. Store in a plastic baggie for easy transport. (You can do the same thing with pinto beans as well.)
