It’s National Women’s Health Week!

National Women’s Health WeekWhat is National Women’s Health Week?

National Women’s Health Week is a weeklong health observance that brings together communities, businesses, government, health organizations, and other groups in an effort to promote women’s health. The theme for 2012 is “It’s Your Time.” National Women’s Health Week empowers women to make their health a top priority. It also encourages women to take the following steps to improve their physical and mental health and lower their risks of certain diseases:

• Visit a health care professional to receive regular checkups and preventive screenings.

• Get active.

• Eat healthy.

• Pay attention to mental health, including getting enough sleep and managing stress.

• Avoid unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking and not wearing a seatbelt or bicycle helmet.

Why celebrate National Women’s Health Week?

We all have a role to play in women’s health. Women often serve as caregivers for their families, putting the needs of their spouses, partners, children, and parents before their own. As a result, women’s health and well- being becomes secondary. As a community, we have a responsibility to support the important women we know and do everything we can to help them take steps for longer, healthier, and happier lives.

Women can easily take charge of their health, thanks to the Affordable Care Act, a landmark health care reform law enacted in 2010. This law gives Americans greater choice and better control over their own health care and includes changes that are especially meaningful to women and their families. For instance, new plans cover vital preventive services, including mammograms, colon cancer screenings, and well-woman visits with no out-of- pocket costs. It also ensures women can see an OB-GYN without a referral. To learn more about the law and your health insurance options, visit go.usa.gov/nHV.

When is National Women’s Health Week?

The 13th annual National Women’s Health Week kicks off on Mother’s Day, May 13, 2012 and is celebrated until May 19, 2012. National Women’s Checkup Day is Monday, May 14, 2012.

How is National Women’s Health Week celebrated?

The nationwide observance is celebrated across America in communities, neighborhoods, towns, cities, counties, hospitals, health centers, businesses, schools, places of worship, recreation centers, and online. Anyone who wants to promote women’s health can celebrate. Organizations large and small hold events, such as free screenings and health fairs, hand out educational materials and spread the word through social media, and more.

For more information about National Women’s Health Week activities or to become a partner, visit womenshealth.gov/whw or call 800-994-9662 (TDD: 888-220-5446).

Cake is the traditional dessert at a graduation celebration. Think about a sheet cake from Fiesta's Bakery with the graduate’s picture or school colors and a message of congratulations.

Classes are coming to an end and it’s time to celebrate! Whether your graduate has just finished high school or college, a graduation party can give them a day to celebrate this great accomplishment with friends and family before their new life begins. This is one party you don’t want to miss, so ask Fiesta for help. You should be enjoying yourself. After all, your graduate didn’t get through school alone!

Most popular gift:

Money is the most popular graduation gift, and money-holder/gift card-holder cards are a thoughtful way to present cash or a check. Increasingly, graduates give thank-you cards and gifts to parents and teachers to express appreciation for guidance and support during their years of education. Look through our cards to find one for that special teacher, coach or team mom to say, “Thank you.”

Most popular party food:

Fiesta’s Deli Trays are a great way to get the party started! It’s easy to feed a crowd with our delicious Deluxe Meat Trays, Cheese Trays or Vegetable Trays. Mix and match, and delight your graduate’s friends with freshly made-to-order trays packed with an assortment of hams, cheeses, fruits and vegetables. The only draw back is that the guests may not want to leave!

Cake is the traditional dessert at a graduation celebration. Think about a sheet cake from Fiesta’s Bakery with the graduate’s picture or school colors and a message of congratulations.

If you serve only one beverage, make it bottled water (especially in this Texas heat)! Add some canned sodas or fruit punch for an option, but you can’t have too much bottled water. Stock up because you can always drink it later!

Make this day fun! Your graduate has made you proud and has a bright future ahead. This should be a day to celebrate accomplishments together. Let Fiesta help you make it happen.

Celebrate Mexican Mother’s Day, “Día las Madres”

Mexican Mother’s Day is always on May 10thMother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on May 10th, every year. It is an important event to the entire family and is celebrated in a colorful fashion. One of the most charming customs is the early morning singing of Las Mañanitas to all the local moms. Many times the children will sing to their mothers. Some of the more affluent families will actually hire mariachi musicians to serenade their moms.

While tamales and atole are the traditional early-morning meal, many people do not eat until mid-morning, enjoying a meal called almuerzo, which is the equivalent of brunch. The range of food at almuerzo is much wider than typical north-of-the-border breakfast fare, ranging from grilled meats to hearty egg dishes and even moles and stews. Fresh seasonal fruit is also served with coffee, tea or Mexican hot chocolate. Mexicans typically exchange flowers and chocolates. Mother’s Day cards are very popular, and apparently May 10th is the largest day for card exchanges in Mexico. If Mexican Mother’s Day falls on a school day, the children proudly invite their mothers to watch them in skits, dances and recitals.

Mexican mothers devote their entire lives to their children. This devotion creates bonds that last a life time. Show your mother just how much you appreciate her this year. Stop by Fiesta and pick up everything you need to show your love and thankfulness to your mother on May 10th.

Chef Kiran Brings Contemporary Indian Food to Fiesta Culinary School

Welcome Chef Kiran Verma as she brings new twists to traditional Indian dishes such as Lamb Keema, Bhindi Masala, Paneer and Pooris. Register for this exciting class today. Read more about Kiran and contemporary Indian cuisine. Fiesta Culinary School Thursday June 28th from 6:30 – 8:30.

More than eight years ago, Kiran Verma opened the doors to a small restaurant in west Houston, convinced there was a market for her classically prepared Indian dishes.

Little did she know then that not only was there a market for her innovative food, but that she was pioneering a movement to bring her native cuisine to a new level of quality, imagination, and style. In the ensuing years, she introduced Indian food to scores of new people and raised the expectations of how and where it can be served. Suddenly, the passion with which diners in London and cities across Europe expressed for the cuisine found an outlet in Houston.

In 2004, Chef Kiran sold Ashiana and began developing another dream – to create a fine-dining Indian restaurant in the heart of Houston’s most competitive restaurant area. In October 2005, their work paid off. Kiran’s, a stunningly designed restaurant at 4100 Westheimer, just west of upscale Highland Village shopping center, officially opened its doors.

While Kiran’s nearly doubles the seating of Ashiana and more than 30 people are employed to create the level of service and attention envisioned, the meticulous care that Chef Kiran puts into her dishes has, if anything has changed, intensified. That care extends to the dining rooms, where the light is intimate, the colors warm, and the seating luxurious. The dishes so carefully managed in the kitchen arrive on fine china, and the beverages, from cocktails to water to fine wines, are served in sparkling crystal glasses and stemware.

Passion fuels Chef Kiran’s motivation for her cooking. Considering herself a classic chef at heart, her menu is greatly influenced by the Mughlai style of northern India. But in time her own tastes and techniques have evolved and been personalized, fusing French and American influences and exploring new combinations of spices, herbs, and other ingredients.

Kiran’s features house specialties including sea bass, lobster, lamb, and an array of the Chef’s own light and flavorful fruit chutneys and sauces. Some dishes, appearing to be so simple when served, are intricately made with time and flavors measured in tightly controlled combinations. Others, seemingly complex and including magnificently flavored soups, chicken dishes, and vegetable creations, are actually the most simple of true home style cooking prized by native Indians seeking childhood comforts.

Lamb KeemaLamb Keema

Chef Kiran and Dr. Sharma have also taken an unprecedented step for Houston in creating a wine collection of some 300 wines, all carefully chosen to complement the myriad of flavors and complexities of Indian cuisine. The collection has already been praised and recognized by wine lovers, experts, and national publications.

Indian food has found its popularity in the United States, and in the past few years, chefs of all ethnic origins and cooking styles have been incorporating it into their own dishes and menus. In Houston, Indian restaurants have long been casual eateries too often identified by buffets and strip malls. In 2005, Chef Kiran has made a grand step in the evolution of this ancient cuisine, and in the culinary history of Houston, a milestone has been set.
